Why preview your thumbnail at real size?

Most viewers see your thumbnail as a small image in a feed. Text that looks fine in your editor can become unreadable at 168 px wide in the related-videos sidebar or on a phone.

Upload your image, type your title and channel name, and compare every placement side by side. If the text is hard to read at the smallest size, make it bigger, shorter or higher in contrast.

  • Check at 100% browser zoom — do not enlarge the preview
  • Test the smallest placement (related videos) first: if it reads there, it reads everywhere
  • Try dark mode too, since many viewers use it
  • Your image stays in your browser and is not uploaded
