What 555 trending thumbnails have in common

We analyzed 555 videos from YouTube's trending list in Japan (264 regular videos and 291 Shorts) with image recognition. The numbers below are for the 264 regular videos.

94%

of trending regular videos have text on the thumbnail

89%

of those use an outline or shadow so the text stays readable

75%

use white as the main text color (white on red, black or yellow is most common)

57%

show a large face; 88% show a person at all

In gaming videos, an exaggerated facial expression appeared in 64% of thumbnails versus 30% in other categories. Caveat: this is a snapshot of videos that were already trending, not a comparison with videos that did not grow, and AI labels can be wrong on small text.

FAQ

What is Thumbnails AI?

Thumbnails AI is a service that turns a short description into a YouTube thumbnail with AI. It was built for Japanese creators and now has an early English version of the generator. The free tools on this page work in English and need no account.

Can I use the AI thumbnail maker in English?

Yes, in an early English version. You can describe your video in English, get a thumbnail with English text, and download it. New accounts get 2 free credits with no credit card. Analysis, scoring and history are still Japanese-only, and paid plans for English-speaking users are not available yet.

Are the tools really free? Do you store my images?

Yes, they are free and need no sign-up. The preview checker and the resizer run entirely in your browser, so your images are not uploaded to our servers.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

YouTube recommends 1280×720 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, as a JPG, GIF or PNG file under 2 MB. The resizer on this site converts any image to those limits.

Where does the trending-video data come from?

We collected 555 videos from YouTube's trending list in Japan on 1 November 2026 through the YouTube Data API, then classified each thumbnail with an image-recognition model. The full write-up (in Japanese) is linked below. It is a snapshot of trending videos only, not a comparison with videos that did not grow.
