YouTube thumbnail size and file-size rules
YouTube recommends custom thumbnails of 1280×720 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, as a JPG, GIF or PNG file under 2 MB. A larger file cannot be uploaded and YouTube shows a "file too large" message.
This tool crops or scales your image to the size you choose, then exports the highest-quality JPEG that fits under 2 MB. If your image has a different aspect ratio, you can crop to the center or fit the whole image on a blurred background.
- YouTube: 1280×720, under 2 MB (minimum width 640 px)
- Shorts, TikTok and Reels covers: 1080×1920 — keep important content near the center, because buttons overlap the top and bottom
- Instagram post: 1080×1440 (3:4 is cropped less in the feed and the profile grid)
